Melara bisogna viverla is a 70-minute documentary on the Rozzol Melara social housing complex in Trieste — a brutalist structure that has been simultaneously utopia, dystopia, neighbourhood, and home. The film explores architecture, community, and urban identity without resolving the contradictions. Sole production: concept, direction, camera, editing, motion graphics, colour grading, sound design.
Animations
The documentary opens with a contextualisation sequence that translates architectural theory and historical background into visual form. 2D motion graphics — combined with voice-over narration and archival material — carry the expository layer of the film: setting up the intellectual framework before the building, and the people inside it, take over.
Post-War Reconstruction and the Modernist Blueprint
This extract is from the graduation version of the film, delivered in March 2026 (Università di Udine, 110/110 con lode). It covers the historical and theoretical introduction: post-WWII Europe, the reconstruction, and the modernist ideology — Le Corbusier, the Unité d'habitation — that shaped large-scale social housing across the continent.
While the overall concept is already present, the implementation of the animation sequences in this version is intentionally reduced. The original vision was more ambitious, particularly in terms of spatial integration and interaction between graphics and filmed environment.
Previz: Integrating Graphics into Physical Space
The original concept for this sequence was more ambitious. The 2D animations were designed to be motion-tracked directly into the concrete pillars of the building — making architectural theory appear to emerge from the structure itself. The previz below was shot on an iPhone to test and communicate the idea.
This is a concept video, not a finished piece. Timings are rough, video quality is iPhone, and the motion tracking is partially imperfect. What it captures is the idea — and the idea is good enough to stay. The full implementation is planned for the final version of the film, which is still in production.
